After more than 50 years of service to the Wellington homeless community, the Wellington Night Shelter is officially closed.
It is with a heavy heart to share with you all that the Wellington Night Shelter will officially close on 30 June 2020.
We had been working hard to improve the quality of care and services we provided for the men at the Shelter and also the safety of our staff.
Unfortunately, underlying issues intensified leading up to the Covid-19 lockdown, and we needed to close our doors to re-look at the way we operate.
We acknowledge that we’ve struggled to extend our service beyond just ‘staying’ at the Shelter.
It has been an extremely difficult time for all of us, but in the end, the well-being of all our people was the highest priority.
So, a decision has been made, that after more than 50 years of service to Wellington's most vulnerable community, our doors will close for good.
The building will be ‘gifted’ to The Wellington City Mission, with the hope that they can continue to provide housing support to our city’s homeless and rough sleepers.
It's a sad day for the Wellington Night Shelter, but despite the circumstances, we are confident in the new beginning that is taking shape.
We'd like to thank everyone who has supported the Wellington Night Shelter over the last 50 years, without your compassion, kindness and generosity we would not have been able to provide shelter, care and support to our homeless community.
